Join us in James’ favorite plein air locations!

Seeing in Paint

Registration is now open for the San Francisco Plein Air Workshop: Seeing in Paint, A Three Day Painting Course with James Kroner, November 19-21, 2026.

This is a very exciting plein air workshop with a full cityscape painting demo by James on the first morning. Students will have the opportunity to create 5 cityscape paintings on location. This workshop includes full plein air painting instruction on a group level, as well as individual instruction tailored to each student’s experience level.

During the painting process James will assist each painter with valuable insight and examples of application. All experience levels are welcome, beginners are welcome too.

Throughout his career, James has put much of his creative focus on cityscape scenes and urban environments. “Seeing in Paint” will give students a special insight into the subject and environment of the cityscape. We have three incredible painting locations - Alta Plaza Park, Lafayette Park, and Aquatic Park Pier.

Students will paint a variety of cityscape subjects including city street scenes and harbor scenes with boats in the marina, all in some of James’s favorite painting spots in the city.

James’s instruction will help students to see and understand with visual examples and a “how to” approach. Students will focus on seeing as the painter see’s, training our eye to see abstract value shapes and relationships.

The cityscape is a complicated subject by nature. James demonstrates how to simplify forms, edit out detail that is not relevant, and emphasize the main idea of the composition. Students will learn the importance of design, edges, drawing with paint, color harmony and focal point.

San Francisco in the fall is a beautiful time of year and a chance for us to enjoy great weather and the beautiful colors in the city. All painting locations provide shade and restrooms close by.

Our workshop course can accommodate up to 12 painting participants. Students will meet at 8:30 each morning at our painting location. Students will have the opportunity to paint in the morning light, and then again after lunch in the afternoon/evening light.
